Arts and Culture at Wake Forest University

Dance

The Dance Program offers multiple dance classes – from beginning classical ballet, modern, jazz, and social dance to advanced technique. Its repertoire includes works in all dance disciplines: jazz, modern and classical ballet. The Wake Forest University Dance Company produces two remarkable concerts each year, performing choreographic works by national renowned, faculty and selected student choreographers.

The Wake Forest Wind Ensemble will perform"Music with a Spanish Flair"in its concert. The centerpiece of the program is a new work for wind ensemble, Symphony No. 3,"Don Quixote,"by Robert W. Smith.

Conductors will be Kevin Bowen, director of bands, and Philip Morgan, associate director of bands.

The Wake Forest Orchestra's fall concert will present a program that includes Rossini's Overture to"The Barber of Seville,"Paul Hindesmith's Five Pieces for String Orchestra and Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony.

David Hagy, orchestra director, will conduct.

Holiday Choral Concert

This winter's Holiday Choral Concert will be a fundraiser for the Concert Choir's Italy Tour on March 5-11, 2010. In May 2007 the ensemble toured Vienna and Austria, performing internationally for the first time in its 60-year history.

The group's second international tour will include performances in Rome, Anzio, and Assisi. The holiday program will feature choral anthems and traditional music for the season.

Also performing on the program will be the Collegium Vocal Ensemble, the Clarinet Choir, and the Wake Forest Chorale.

The admission charge for this concert will help cover the choir's travel expenses in March.

Master Class with Persis Parshall Vehar, composer-in-residence at Canisius College, Buffalo, New York

The master class will consist of selections from the Concerto for Clarinet,"City of Light,"by Persis Vehar, featuring Wake Forest faculty Eileen Young, clarinet, and Persis Vehar, piano; and solo selections for clarinet and saxophone by Persis Vehar, featuring Wake Forest students from the studio of Eileen Young, with Thomas Turnbull, accompanist. The master class will also include a presentation by Ms. Vehar on composition and compositional techniques.

Fall Choral Concert

Music for Chorus and Guitar.

The concert will feature the Wake Forest Concert Choir, the Collegium Vocal Ensemble, guest artist Carlos Perez, virtuoso guitarist from Chile, and guitar students of Patricia Dixon.

The concert will be part of the new Wake Forest Guitar Series and tickets will be on sale at the door for $10 for general admission and free to Wake Forest faculty, staff, and students.
